A diamond's identification would be for example: J SI1 0.50CT BRILL RND
- J would represent the colour grade
- SI1 would represent the clarity grade
- 0.50CT would be the carat weight
- BRILL RND would be the cut
After reading the 4C guide you would have a clearer and more detailed understanding of the significance of each grade. Along with those grades a diamond certification, depending of source, may supply other information such as the measurements (width x length x height), fluorescence and finish ( polish and proportions). A note may be found by the grader of further details such as laser or heat treatments and whether it is a natural or treated stone. Artificial Diamonds would not be certified but treated diamonds may not be the original natural colour or clarity of the stone. Further notes would be made in regard to any other identifiable marks or features on the diamond. Below is a sample of a GIA Certificate.

Evaluations by qualified professionals are not only used to grade the quality but also used to supply valuations for marketing and insuring precious stones and jewellery. Having a certified diamond would ensure that you receive an accurate valuation. For a nominal fee your local professional jeweller could advise you about either providing a valuation for your jewellery or a certificate for your diamond. Valuations and Certificated Diamonds are not to be confused with each other.
