After an urgent meeting by African diamond authorities in Kimberley, South Africa in 2000. The repeat of such events occurring again was prevented by the formation of the Kimberley Process decreed later that year by UN resolution and the formation of the World Diamond Council, ensuring that the diamond trade remained free of blood diamonds and conflict diamonds. By 2002 and 2003 it was a world standard legislation. Today there are only 74 countries legally allowed to import and export diamonds who abide by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.
